R.E.M. – Reckoning (1LP Vinyl, Reissue)

€30

Reckoning opens up the guitars further and lets the rhythms flow. R.E.M. sounds agile and direct here, while the melodies still leave room for doubt and melancholy.

KEEP DIGGING
THE RECORD.

Harborcoat starts with guitar lines that intertwine and vocals that gain extra color in the choruses. The bass not only supports the chords but propels the songs forward with its own melodic steps. In Pretty Persuasion, you hear how these elements combine to create a compact, almost restless pop song.

So. Central Rain maintains the same clarity but gives more weight to the emotion. The camera slows down the movement and makes the space around Stipe’s voice palpable. Next, (Don’t Go Back to) Rockville introduces a recognizable country feel. As a result, Reckoning can sound lighthearted without the feelings behind the songs being superficial.

WHY IT MATTERS.

This record suits listeners who primarily seek melody and interplay in the guitars. The pleasure lies in the way the band responds: a vocal line is answered by the bass, a rhythmic accent causes a guitar figure to tilt. Reckoning is accessible enough for a first listen and rich enough to put on again afterwards.

BEYOND THE RECORD.

Where Murmur still partially conceals its contours, Reckoning defines them more sharply. Together, these albums demonstrate how R.E.M. builds its own sound without constantly writing the same song. Discover more records on the R.E.M. artist page.
