BEHIND THE RECORDS.

THE ARTIST.

With R.E.M., a guitar rarely sounds solely as accompaniment. The clear patterns of Peter Buck, the agile bass, and the vocals of Michael Stipe each carve their own path. It is precisely this combination that makes the early records so inviting: the melody is direct, while the lyrics and atmosphere leave room for personal interpretation.

Murmur and Reckoning provide a nice gateway to that world. Later, the arrangements of Out of Time and Automatic for the People acquire a broader palette; Monster, on the other hand, explicitly seeks out the distorted guitar. Anyone listening to R.E.M. on vinyl can follow these changes without reducing each record to its most famous single.

A LP also places the less exuberant tracks in the sequence. Therefore, compare an early side of the album with a later record and listen to the shift between folk-like guitar lines, heavy rock, and subdued melodies. The available vinyl releases and existing stories accompanying SJELF offer various entry points into the same idiosyncratic band.
