KEEP DIGGING
THE RECORD.

Shake Dog Shake starts heavy, with drums that land emphatically with every beat. Bird Mad Girl then takes a much more agile path, making the album immediately less predictable. Wailing Wall has a dragging, ritualistic atmosphere; Give Me It throws the brakes off. The Top uses these leaps as part of its character. You shouldn't expect a single fixed mood to follow the songs.

Dressing Up plays with a smooth rhythm and a vocal line that sits close to the accompaniment. The Caterpillar sounds almost airy, but the ragged instrumental colors keep the song strange. Piggy in the Mirror and Bananafishbones pull the album into more turbulent territory once again. The long title track ultimately lets the sound swirl around rather than neatly summarizing everything. Whoever follows the small rhythmic and melodic shifts discovers a keen sense of song structure beneath the capriciousness.

WHY IT MATTERS.

The Top is a good choice if the well-known Cure hits have made you curious about the side paths. The album offers no uniform background: every new song can change the perspective. It is precisely the clash between playfulness, menace, and psychedelic sound that makes it worthwhile to play from start to finish frequently.

BEYOND THE RECORD.
