COUNTRY / FOLK

Townes Van Zandt brings a story strongly to the forefront with a restrained voice and carefully chosen accompaniment. The melodies leave room for the lyrics, while small instrumental lines add a different color. The songs can seem simple yet carry a great deal of tension. His delivery also gives weight to a short phrase without emphatically magnifying it.

Discovering Townes Van Zandt on vinyl allows the stories to stand side by side. A LP clearly reveals the differences between studio and live recordings. Also pay attention to the guitar and the silences surrounding the voice: they set the tempo of a narrative and allow a familiar melody to appear from a different perspective.

A vinyl album gives the songs a fixed order and a tangible place in your collection. Give the lesser-known tracks time as well, and follow the transitions within a side of the record.
