THE NOTORIOUS B.I.G.

The Notorious B.I.G. never had to raise his voice to command a room. His flow glided over beats as if every pause had been mapped out in advance, while his stories were full of details, humor, and menace. Biggie could make the street sound like a crime movie and, one track later, just as convincingly create an irresistible radio single.

The Notorious B.I.G. makes rap move through a distinct narrative voice and a precise sense of timing. A sentence can lie relaxed on the beat yet still receive a great deal of rhythmic emphasis. The production makes room for bass, samples, and recognizable motifs. The strength lies both in the story and in the way the words take musical form.

Listening to The Notorious B.I.G. on vinyl makes the album context important. A LP places different narrative perspectives and productions side by side. Also listen to the space between the phrases and the beat's responses: there, it becomes audible how a recognizable flow gives a song direction without constantly using the same emphasis.

A vinyl album gives the songs a fixed order and a tangible place in your collection. Give the lesser-known tracks time as well, and follow the transitions within a side of the record.
