Fagen and Becker met as students at Bard College in New York State. Jazz records, literature, blues, and a shared sense of dry humor formed their common ground. Fagen played keyboards; Becker was a guitarist and bassist. From an early stage, their collaboration revolved around songwriting. The band was the means to make those ideas audible.

Steely Dan creates songs in which an accessible melody combines with harmonic richness and sharp observations. The arrangements sometimes seem effortless, but every instrument has a clear place. Jazz colors, pop form, and a smooth rhythm work closely together. Even a brief instrumental detail can change the mood or give a lyric an extra ironic undertone.

Two Against Nature and Everything Must Go open different chapters of the repertoire. Listening to Steely Dan on vinyl invites you to follow an album at a leisurely pace and hear a different part each time. In 1971, they moved to Los Angeles, where, through producer Gary Katz, they ended up as songwriters with ABC/Dunhill. Their material proved not always easy to place with other artists. Therefore, it was given its own vehicle. Steely Dan started in 1972 as a real band, with guitarists Denny Dias and Jeff Baxter, drummer Jim Hodder, and singer David Palmer, among others.

That beginning is important. The later image of two men endlessly turning knobs tells only part of the story. Beneath their studio work lies the experience of playing together: how a drummer lifts a passage, how a guitar can answer a vocal line, and how a bass line makes the tension in a chord audible. Their precision is rooted in that musical movement.
