Placebo began in London in 1994, but the roots of the collaboration go back further. Brian Molko and Stefan Olsdal attended the same school in Luxembourg. BEHIND THE RECORDS.

THE ARTIST.

Placebo began in London in 1994, but the roots of the collaboration go back further. Brian Molko and Stefan Olsdal attended the same school in Luxembourg. It was only when their paths crossed again in London that the musical connection was formed. Molko brought his voice and guitar; Olsdal became the versatile partner on bass, guitar, and keyboards.

Placebo creates rock in which a recognizable voice and a tense melody keep each other sharp. Brian Molko’s vocals give the songs a distinctive color, while guitars and electronic details build an environment that can sound simultaneously direct and restless. The music seeks feelings that cannot easily be captured in a single word. A chorus offers recognition, but need not remove the doubt within the song.

A full album reveals more of that variety than the well-known singles. Fierce passages stand alongside quieter songs and arrangements in which the sonic layer comes more to the fore. On vinyl, those differences take on a fixed order. Listening to a LP side also gives the smaller melodies time and makes clear how the band can maintain an atmosphere without letting every song end in the same way.

Placebo on vinyl suits lovers of alternative rock with a distinctly emotional voice. View the available records by period, repertoire, and performance; studio albums and live recordings each offer a different perspective. The existing artist story provides additional background. While listening, pay attention to the balance between vocals and accompaniment, and to the details that make a familiar melody just a little more uncomfortable or intimate.

It is a combination that leaves plenty of room for play. With Placebo, a bass line doesn't just have to be the foundation of a song. It can also pull a melody forward, while the guitar lays gritty accents around it. And when a keyboard changes the tone, there is always that voice: high, nasal, sometimes almost biting, but with a remarkable feel for a catchy phrase.

In British pop of the mid-nineties, the band stands out immediately. Molko’s androgynous appearance and the openness of the songs bring a different kind of stage presence. Those who do not identify with naturally tough behavior can find something else here. Placebo makes room for people who are still figuring out their attitude towards the outside world.
