From Oxford venues to a world of her own consisting of guitars and electronics. Kanadia makes big music with a vulnerable core, from the debut to The Fire That’s Tearing Through Our Home.

Some bands write as if the venue is already bigger than it actually is. With Kanadia, you hear broad guitars, deep keyboards, and melodies that slowly rise. Yet, behind that big sound lurks something small and personal: the need to hold on to what threatens to disappear.

Kanadia was formed in Oxford in 2015. Singer and guitarist James Bettis, keyboardist Melissa Marshall, and drummer Tim Lucas formed the core; on the first recordings, Jack Ashworth played bass. Everton Barbato now fulfills that role. In this band, the keyboards stand distinctly alongside the guitar. They can lay down a low undercurrent or, conversely, allow a sound to float when the rest of the band pauses.
