PHILIP GLASS.

Philip Glass uses repetition to make the music constantly change. A motif can remain familiar, while rhythm, harmony, or instrumentation shifts almost imperceptibly. His compositions therefore call attention to the movement within the pattern. Piano, strings, voices, and ensembles each have a different way of making that development audible. The music can strike a chord immediately without needing a conventional refrain.

A complete recording demonstrates how that form works better than a fragment. A passage gains meaning through its place in a larger whole; what initially seems simple can carry a great deal of tension over time. On vinyl, a LP side makes that time tangible. The fixed sequence invites you to follow a composition and hear when a change in sound influences the direction of the piece.

The Philip Glass on vinyl offers various inputs, from piano works and ensemble recordings to film music. For each release, pay attention to the performing musicians and the exact repertoire: the same composition can be experienced very differently in a different performance. The product pages assist with this choice. Then, give the LP a full side and listen to the subtle shifts with which a recurring pattern continually takes on new meaning.
