THE ARTIST.

CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL.

A short guitar intro and the raspy voice of John Fogerty are often enough to recognize Creedence Clearwater Revival. The band from California combined rock, blues, and country with imagery of rivers, dark skies, and a life on the road. Beneath the familiar choruses lie stories that are less reassuring than they sometimes sound.

Creedence Clearwater Revival easily evokes the American South, but John and Tom Fogerty, Stu Cook and Doug Clifford came from California. Their musical landscape emerged from influences, stories, and imagination. In their interplay, blues, country, and rock 'n' roll became one direct language, carried by Fogerty's vocals and a rhythm section that kept the momentum going.

The pace at which the albums appeared was striking. In 1969, Bayou Country, Green River, and Willy and the Poor Boys were released. Proud Mary sounds like a departure to another life; beneath the upbeat rhythm of Bad Moon Rising, however, lies doom. Fortunate Son directs his anger at inequality and the protection that background can offer.

Cosmo's Factory juxtaposes short, precise songs with longer grooves. The band can make a chorus land immediately and then build tension through repetition for minutes on end. Those seeking a broad introduction will find many familiar songs on Chronicle. In our CCR Story, we look beyond the hits, at the collective sound and the stories that hold the records together.

Creedence Clearwater Revival makes songs that quickly reveal their essence. John Fogerty’s voice and guitar give the music a raw feel, while the rhythm remains clear and purposeful. Blues, country, and rock ’n’ roll come together without a song having to sacrifice its simplicity. The details are often found in a subtle guitar response or a sharp vocal phrase.

Bayou Country, Green River, and Cosmo’s Factory are different chapters of that approach on vinyl. A compilation LP like Chronicle offers an overview; a studio album also features the lesser-known passages of a single period. Live At Woodstock provides a stage perspective. The available tribute release is a tribute by other artists and therefore serves a different function than a regular CCR record.

In the Creedence Clearwater Revival vinyl selection at SJELF, you will find Bayou Country, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Pendulum, and Burn On the Bayou: Heavy Underground Tribute To Creedence.
