Art Blakey turns the drums into an active conversational partner. The rhythms carry the band but also provide signals, answers, and new energy to a solo. As a result, the interplay remains constantly in motion.

Blakey does not merely keep a solo going; he can also encourage, challenge, or give it a new accent. A short stroke responds to a wind instrument, a roll makes room for the next entry. That gives the music its lively conversation. Within hard bop, those clear melodies and the continuous movement of the rhythms are closely intertwined.

On vinyl, you can follow a performance again from the perspective of a different musician. Start with the main melody and then shift your attention to the drums or the bass. The same solo then takes on a different background. The Jazz Messengers demonstrate that a powerful band sound arises from listening to one another: every response changes the space in which the next phrase is played.

First follow the brass instruments and then listen to the drums under the same passage. An accent can lift a phrase or announce a new direction. On the Jazz Messengers, the tension arises from musicians hearing and challenging each other.
