MULATU ASTATKE.

Mulatu Astatke interlocks jazz, rhythm, and Ethiopian melodic forms. A recurring pattern can lay the foundation, while wind instruments, keyboards, and percussion continually bring out a different detail. The music has a strong groove while simultaneously leaving room for an unusual instrumental color. As a result, you can listen to a track both as a rhythmic movement and as a layered arrangement.

Mulatu of Ethiopia and the available Ethio Jazz releases offer different entry points. Inspiration Information 3 reveals a unique world of collaboration. On vinyl LP, it is beautiful to quietly follow the instrumental parts and notice how a short motif changes function. The bass and percussion hold the music together, while a melodic line continually opens a new angle to the whole.

These records are suitable for jazz enthusiasts who wish to expand their collection from other rhythms and traditions. Kamasi Washington and Herbie Hancock offer additional listening paths with a unique approach to interplay and sound. The product pages accompanying SJELF display the available LP releases and the corresponding Spotify album links.
