BEHIND THE RECORDS.

ACHTER
DE MUZIEK.

Arch Enemy lays melodic guitar lines over a solid foundation of riffs, drums, and raw vocals. The tension lies in the contrast between the sharpness of the sound and the clear lines running through it.

The guitar melodies give a distinct character to the hard exterior. They can extend a riff, open a chorus, or briefly stand apart from the vocals. As a result, the music maintains direction even during the busiest passages. The band demonstrates how a melodic motif and a heavy rhythmic foundation can reinforce each other.

On a vinyl LP, that interplay comes to the fore across various songs. Within death metal, it is not only the fiercest attack that is interesting, but also the moment when a guitar line is given space. Give a recurring theme time and listen to how the drums change underneath. A subsequent passage then feels not only heavier but also takes on a different tension and a different perspective.

Hear how a guitar part establishes a motif and a subsequent phrase responds to it. Not every heavy moment calls for more speed. A recurring melody can actually give direction to the power of the entire band.
