THE ARTIST.

TALK TALK.

In Talk Talk, a silence can carry just as much weight as a chorus. The music moves from recognizable melodies to passages where every entry counts. A voice, an organ note, or a sudden outburst changes the space around the other instruments.

Spirit of Eden calls for an unhurried listen. The songs unfold in waves: something is built up, falls away, and returns in a different color. The musicians leave space open without losing contact with one another. It is precisely because of this that soft passages can sound intense. The album demonstrates how far a group can go when melody is no longer the only form of cohesion.

Talk Talk demonstrates how pop can gradually begin to seek more space. A direct melody can be supported by a tight rhythm, but also by instruments that leave much open. Mark Hollis's voice lends tension to both approaches. It is precisely the relationship between a sung phrase and the surrounding silence that can deepen a song.

Spirit of Eden creates a different listening world than the earlier, more rhythmic records. Listening to Talk Talk on vinyl invites you to follow that development album by album. A LP gives subdued passages time to let their sound grow, with attention to the subtle interactions between vocals, guitar, keyboards, and brass.

A vinyl album gives the songs a fixed order and a tangible place in your collection. Give the lesser-known tracks time as well, and follow the transitions within a side of the record.
