With NOFX, a song can be almost over before you realize how much is happening inside. A bassline pulls the beat, the drums shoot forward, and behind Fat Mike’s nasal voice, backing vocals appear that fall surprisingly precisely into place. The whole thing sounds loose and raw. Yet, the music would fall apart without the craftsmanship underneath. That is the appeal of this band: they make something complex sound as if it is spiraling out of control on the spot.

NOFX combines speed with a striking sense of melody. Fat Mike's vocals may be gritty and the lyrics may deviate from a neat line, but beneath that loose impression lies a band that knows its timing precisely. Choruses, bass lines, and drum accents make the short songs agile. As a result, the music doesn't need to last long to convey multiple ideas; an unexpected twist can change the entire song in a matter of seconds.

The War on Errorism and Wolves in Wolves' Clothing demonstrate how the band holds diverse subjects and moods together within a single album. Humor and seriousness can coexist, sometimes even within the same song. On vinyl, that alternation takes a clear form. The tracks follow one another quickly, but the placement of a quieter or longer moment makes a difference to the entire side of the record. That is a good reason to listen to the LP as a whole.

NOFX began in 1983 in Los Angeles. The name later became associated with melodic Californian punk, but that recognizable sound was not yet fully formed at the start. The early years were about playing, experimenting, and finding a lineup that could support each other. Fat Mike, born Michael Burkett, became the bassist, vocalist, and central songwriter. Eric Melvin gave the guitar parts and backing vocals a raw edge; Erik Sandin laid the fast, agile foundation with his drums.

Guitarist and trumpeter Aaron Abeyta, better known as El Hefe, has been part of the long-standing core lineup since the early nineties. His melodic playing and brass parts expand the sound. The band can play hard and short, but also lean towards ska or give a melody a different color almost casually. That makes the difference between a group that only plays fast and a group that maintains different faces even at high speed.
