SJELF. STORIES WORTH KNOWING.

ARTIST STORY

RAYE.

RAYE possesses the voice of a classic soul singer and the instincts of a modern pop writer. For years, the world heard her work primarily through other artists. Only after she left her label behind was she able to show who was truly behind all those perfect choruses.

Rachel Keen wrote hits for others, sang on dance records, and spent years seeming to be on the verge of her own breakthrough. But freedom only came after her patience ran out. With My 21st Century Blues., RAYE turned frustration into a debut that was simultaneously a jazz club, a pop record, and a public reckoning.

THE VOICE BEHIND OTHER PEOPLE'S HITS.

RAYE grew up in South London in a musical family. Gospel, jazz, R&B, and pop were all part of her home life. She studied briefly at the BRIT School, but soon chose studios and writing sessions instead. Her gift for melodies landed her behind the scenes for artists like Beyoncé, John Legend, and Charli XCX.

As a performing artist, she entered the spotlight in the mid-2010s with electronic pop and collaborations with the likes of Jax Jones, Jonas Blue, and Regard. Her voice was immediately recognizable: clear enough for radio, but with a raw edge that hinted she had more to say than the dance floor allowed.

In the meantime, her own album remained elusive. Singles were released, plans changed, and RAYE spoke increasingly openly about the frustration that her label refused to release a debut. In 2021, she made it public that she had had music ready for years. Shortly thereafter, she left Polydor and became independent.

ONE THING YOU DIDN’T KNOW.

YOU ALREADY KNEW HER WORK.

Before RAYE fully broke through as a solo artist, she co-wrote songs for big pop names. Her songwriting touch was hidden in the hits of others for years, while her own debut album was held back. This detour ultimately made her a sharper and freer artist.

THE RECORD NO ONE COULD STOP ANYMORE.

My 21st Century Blues. was released in 2023 without a traditional major label behind her. The record refused to pick a single genre. Big band, soul, house, blues, R&B, and pop sat side by side, connected by a voice that no longer had to soften its subject matter.

On Escapism., self-destruction was packaged as irresistible pop. The song became a global hit via social media and reached number one in the United Kingdom. But the record went deeper than success. RAYE sang openly about sexual violence, addiction, body image, and the way the music industry treats young artists.

That honesty gave the music weight. The glamour of old jazz clubs and orchestral arrangements collided with lyrics that were emphatically set in the present. RAYE didn't sound like she was presenting a carefully crafted brand, but like she was finally allowed to share all versions of herself at once.

Freedom didn’t turn RAYE into a different artist. It ensured that the world could finally hear the complete artist.

SIX BRITS, ONE NIGHT.

At the 2024 BRIT Awards, her independent gamble made history. RAYE won six awards in one night, more than any artist had ever won in a single edition. Between the accolades, she performed a medley that relied not on elaborate sets, but on arrangement, voice, and presence.

The moment felt bigger than the usual shower of awards. An artist who had spent years waiting for permission was now at the center of the stage of the industry that had kept her small. RAYE’s story thus became not just a success story, but also proof that ownership can be heard.

HOPE ON FOUR SIDES.

In 2026, This Music May Contain Hope. followed, a second studio album that expanded her ambition further. The record was structured as a movement through four seasons: from darkness to light, divided across the four sides of a double LP. The physical format became part of the story.

Where the debut sounded like a door being kicked open, the second album more often seeks recovery. Jazz, soul, and grand pop arrangements remain, but the focus shifts from exposure to relearning how to trust. Hope is not offered as an easy solution; it appears after struggle, doubt, and self-examination.

RAYE has thus become a rare pop star: technically impressive, commercially successful, and yet difficult to smooth over. Her independence is not a footnote to the music. She dictates how the music sounds, which stories are given space, and how much risk a pop album is allowed to take.

THE FINAL WORD.

FREEDOM SOUNDS LOUDER.

RAYE’s story is not about a suddenly discovered talent. It is about talent that was visible for years, but could only fully grow once it didn't require permission. Her best music therefore carries two forces at once: the precision of someone who wrote for others for thousands of hours, and the urgency of someone who finally has nothing left to hold back.
