ARTIST STORY
MARVIN GAYE.
With Marvin Gaye, a question can sound softer than an answer and still hit much harder. His voice reaches out: to a lover, to a friend, to a world that barely understands itself. The melodies are seductive enough to draw you in at once. What he puts into them often stays with you longer.

Marvin Gaye was born in Washington, D.C., on April 2, 1939. He sang in church and also played piano and drums. Through vocal groups, including the Moonglows, he found his way to Motown. His 1961 debut, The Soulful Moods of Marvin Gaye, reveals his love of traditional songs. Later, he found a much larger audience within Motown’s vibrant soul scene.
The warmth is immediate on “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You).” In his duets with Tammi Terrell, singing together becomes a conversation: the voices respond, encourage each other, and draw each other on. That makes “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” sound bigger than two separate vocal parts. It is trust given a melody.
A DIFFERENT QUESTION.
“I Heard It Through the Grapevine” brings a darker tension in 1968. Gaye sings as though the bad news hasn’t quite sunk in yet. Norman Whitfield’s production gives that uncertainty a driving rhythm. The voice remains supple, but there is little peace to be found here.
With 1971’s What’s Going On, the scale changes. War, injustice, and the fragility of the world around us come close. The title track opens a conversation; “Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)” and “Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)” carry it forward. The songs flow into one another. That makes the album especially powerful as a whole: one mood takes on a different meaning each time.
SOFTNESS WITH WEIGHT.
1973’s Let’s Get It On puts desire front and center. The vocals move freely around the groove, with little delays that give each line extra emphasis. On I Want You, that physical ease becomes even more lush. Here, My Dear then reveals how complicated love can become when a relationship is over.
After a period in Ostend, Belgium, Gaye returned in 1982 with Midnight Love. “Sexual Healing” pairs his unmistakable voice with a tighter, electronic rhythm. He died on April 1, 1984. His music continues to resonate because feelings are never flattened in it: tenderness can chafe, sorrow can move you, and a difficult question can sound beautiful.
ONE THING YOU DIDN’T KNOW.
Before becoming one of Motown’s greatest voices, Gaye also worked there as a drummer. He played for the Miracles, among others. You can hear that sense of timing in the way his vocals move with the rhythm.
