ARTIST STORY
LENNY KRAVITZ.
Lenny Kravitz only needs a few seconds to make a song recognizable. A riff can immediately open the door; a smooth bassline takes over after that. His music has the physical power of rock and the warmth of soul. For him, those two sides rarely have to fight for priority.

Lenny Kravitz was born in New York on May 26, 1964. He grew up listening to diverse music and developed into a singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. You can hear that broad foundation on Let Love Rule, his 1989 debut. Psychedelic colors, gospel-like warmth, and solid rock parts find a shared form there.
The title track slowly builds conviction. The chorus has something that invites you to sing along, without the song giving everything away at once. Kravitz sounds familiar with older music, but he uses those influences to shape his own message. Love is a recurring subject for him, both in personal songs and in tracks that are emphatically outward-looking.
THE RIFF AND THE SOFT VOICE.
Mama Said was released in 1991. “It Ain’t Over ’til It’s Over” shows just how much soul his music possesses. The high vocals, the fluid melody, and the controlled tempo work together. The song barely has to push to get close to you. Its power lies precisely in the way the voice moves over the rhythm.
Two years later, “Are You Gonna Go My Way” takes a very different step. The opening riff is compact, fierce, and direct. You know almost immediately what energy the song is going to carry. Yet, the groove remains essential here as well. It is rock that moves forward through interplay, not just volume. Together, those two songs show how smoothly Kravitz can switch between tenderness and exuberance.
A SOUND THAT CAN MOVE WITH YOU.
After 1995's Circus, 5 (1998) brought, among others, “Fly Away” and “I Belong to You.” The former has a chorus that almost automatically becomes a collective anthem; the latter shows a smoother, more relaxed side. Kravitz can make his arrangements sound broad, but usually maintains a clear melodic center.
The albums that followed, from Lenny and Baptism to Black and White America, shift the accents. Sometimes the guitar is at the front, sometimes the funk, sometimes a larger pop melody. His voice connects these choices. There is enough grit in it to carry a heavy song, but also enough softness to keep a ballad convincing.
THE TOUCH OF THE MAKER.
On Blue Electric Light, released in May 2024, Kravitz once again does a lot himself. He writes, produces, and plays most of the instruments, with contributions from his longtime guitarist Craig Ross. The record was recorded in his studio in the Bahamas. “TK421” and “Human” emphasize how important movement remains within his music.
That personal involvement in the recording helps explain why his records have cohesion. A drum accent, a bass part, and a guitar can react to each other from the same musical frame of mind. The individual influences remain audible, but the result has a clear sender. Kravitz seeks a sound that can be solid while remaining open enough to dance to.
ONE THING YOU DIDN’T KNOW.
Kravitz co-wrote Madonna’s “Justify My Love” and also worked on the production. The restrained, sultry approach shows a different side of his musical handwriting than his most famous guitar hits.
