DI-RECT.

DI-RECT is proof that a band doesn't have to have just one career. The group from The Hague broke through young, survived a change of frontman, and years later found a second, deeper form — without losing their instinct for a great chorus. Some bands grow up by leaving their youth behind. DI-RECT did something harder: the group took their history with them, but refused to be anchored by it. Listen further on LP with Sphinx and Rolling With the Punches.

THE FIRST LIFE.

DI-RECT was formed in The Hague in 1999, when drummer Jamie Westland was only fifteen. With Tim Akkerman as lead singer, their breakthrough followed quickly. Discover, Over the Moon, and All Systems Go! made the band a staple of Dutch pop rock. The songs were direct, energetic, and built for both radio and festival stages.

That early success came with a persistent label: youthful, accessible, almost too obvious. As venues got bigger, the need to take more musical risks grew as well. When Akkerman left in 2009, the logical storyline seemed at an end. Instead, the most interesting chapter began.

THE SECOND LIFE.

Through the television program Wie is Di-rect?, Marcel Veenendaal became the new frontman. His soulful voice changed not only the sound but also the center of gravity of the band. Guitars remained important, but groove, brass, strings, and spacious arrangements were given more room. DI-RECT no longer sounded like a band trying to repeat their first success.

ONE THING YOU DIDN’T KNOW.

The hyphen came before the status.

The name was initially simply Direct. The hyphen was added because the desired internet domain was already taken — a practical choice that ultimately became part of their identity.

The transformation did not immediately result in a straight line upward. That is precisely why their later breakthrough with Soldier On feels so deserved. In 2020, the song became a collective anchor during the first lockdown: comforting without becoming saccharine, big without empty display. It was DI-RECT's first top-ten hit in thirteen years.

The greatest triumph of DI-RECT is not that the band continued to exist, but that they learned how to become relevant again.

THE STADIUM MOMENT.

In June 2025, DI-RECT played three sold-out nights at De Kuip. A total of 145,000 visitors attended; moreover, these were the final concerts at the Rotterdam stadium before it stopped operating as a music venue. For a band that once threatened to be relegated to mere youthful sentiment, this was not a jubilee stunt, but a confirmation of an entirely new audience.

On records like Wild Hearts and Sphinx, you can hear why. The production is broad, but the core remains human: the tension between control and surrender, between a rhythm that wants to push forward and a voice that lingers just a moment longer on what hurts.

THE LONG GAME.

That development is also clearly audible on vinyl. Place the compact, youthful Discover next to the spaciously constructed Sphinx and the distance seems enormous. Yet the engine is the same: five musicians who only trust a melody once they can lift it up together. The records document not one straight career, but a series of choices to start over. As a result, listening back feels less like nostalgia and more like following a band that dares to become a new version of itself every time.

THE CRAFT.

Behind the grand gestures lies a remarkably disciplined band. DI-RECT often builds songs from rhythm and dynamics: a verse doesn't have to give everything away when the chorus can open up the horizon later. Veenendaal can belt out powerful notes, but his best moments occur when the arrangements first make him sound small. Spike van Zoest and Paul Jan Bakker use guitars less as a wall and more as color; Bas van Wageningen and Jamie Westland guard the momentum.

This working method also explains why the band can use orchestral elements without losing their rock core. Brass and strings don't simply increase the volume, but shift the emotional temperature. On Rolling with the Punches, Wild Hearts, and Sphinx, you hear a group that understands better and better when to push and when to leave space. The result is stadium music in which the details remain intact: created not only for the moment when everyone sings along, but also for the second and third listening at home.

WHY IT LASTS.

DI-RECT possesses something rare: continuity without stagnation. The band members know each other's reflexes but don't use that familiarity as an excuse for routine. Each phase has a different silhouette, while the urge for connection remains the same.

THE FINAL WORD.

A second life, completely deserved.

DI-RECT shows that durability in pop music is not the same as preserving yourself. Sometimes a band must change precisely in order to remain recognizable.
