MOVIN’ OUT SETS THE PACE.

The Stranger was released on September 29, 1977. It is Billy Joel's first album collaboration with producer Phil Ramone. Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song) opens the original program. The band sets the pace clearly and the vocals provide an immediate entry into the story. The album manages to sound clear and accessible without giving all the songs the same structure.

THE MASK AND THE PROXIMITY.

The title track introduces a different kind of tension. The cover shows Joel next to a mask, an image that fits an album where people don't always fully reveal what is going on inside them. Just the Way You Are then opts for a softer, more direct sense of closeness. Each song receives its own arrangement, yet they remain within the same band identity. This gives the album more cohesion than just a loose collection of well-known titles.

A RESTAURANT, VIENNA, AND THE FINALE.

Scenes from an Italian Restaurant closes the first side of the original LP with an elaborate journey through various passages. Vienna opens the second side. The piano and the voice are given a different space there than in the more exuberant tracks. Only the Good Die Young, She’s Always a Woman, and Get It Right the First Time shift the focus once again. Everybody Has a Dream concludes the program. The album consists of nine original songs, even when a digital tracklist presents a recurring passage separately.
