Absynthe Minded was released in 2009. The band name on the cover might give the impression of a debut, but Acquired Taste, New Day, and There Is Nothing preceded it. The fourth album allows the group to be heard through thirteen songs in which a recognizable melody is given room for moving accompaniment. Envoi and Moodswing Baby are familiar entry points. They tell you a lot about the appeal of the record, but their surroundings deserve a listen just as much.
IF YOU DON’T GO, I DON’T GO.
If You Don’t Go, I Don’t Go opens the sequence, followed by Heaven Knows and Dead On My Feet. That beginning makes it meaningful to follow the record from the first song. You get to know the different relationships between voice, rhythm, and accompaniment before Envoi appears. Mercury, Paramount, and Multiple Choice continue the path. A melody that appeals immediately stands here among other musical ideas. As a result, the well-known single is not the standard by which every song must be measured.
MOODSWING BABY AND ENVOI.
Moodswing Baby and Envoi appear one after the other in the digital album order. That provides two points of recognition without the music remaining in one movement. Listen first to the vocal line and then to what the instruments do between the sung sentences. An accompanying figure can provide its own accent or prepare for a following moment. In this way, a familiar song gains a different depth upon a second listen. The chorus remains an entry point; the small movements around it help keep the song open.
PAPILLON AND THE PATH TO THE END.
Fortress Europe and Papillon belong to the later part of the sequence. Then follow Weekend In Bombay, Oh The Longing, and Consider It Done. Give the finale the place it has within this sequence. An album can find its coherence precisely in the differences between songs. The Artist Story of Absynthe Minded connects this record to the earlier albums and the later chapters As It Ever Was, Jungle Eyes, Riddle Of The Sphinx, and Sunday Painter. This way, you can continue listening after this album without limiting the band to one hit.
