THE RECORD.

The drums of Sunday Bloody Sunday immediately define the stance of War. The song builds tension before Bono sings his first words; the violin gives the tight band sound an extra sharp edge. New Year’s Day then demonstrates how important Adam Clayton is: the bass carries the ongoing movement, while the piano and guitar take their own paths above it. On this 1983 record, U2 works more often from colliding elements than from a single broad layer of guitar.

Two Hearts Beat as One pulls that approach towards a mobile groove. In contrast stands Drowning Man, in which acoustic sounds and vocals offer less stability and the focus shifts inward. The closer, 40, turns a simple repetition into a collective gesture. It is precisely this progression that prevents War from becoming merely a collection of combative singles.
