U2 – Boy (1LP Vinyl)

€20

A guitar racing ahead, drums chasing her, and a voice still searching for words. Boy captures the unrest of growing up in songs that sound much bigger than their young creators.

KEEP DIGGING
THE RECORD.

I Will Follow immediately draws you in with a short, recurring guitar figure. On Boy, The Edge is simultaneously rhythm guitarist and architect: he lets notes build, lays down short accents, and creates space for the rest of the band to move. Larry Mullen Jr. gives that movement a physical drive. Out of Control and The Electric Co. keep the tension high without the music losing its melodic core.

Also listen to the transition from An Cat Dubh to Into the Heart. There, U2 discovers how a song can extend beyond a chorus: the instruments take their time, the tempo of your attention changes. The Ocean then provides a brief, quiet interlude. That alternation gives the 1980 debut its character. The band is still searching, and that is exactly what you hear reflected in the music: ambition, nervousness, and the joy of a unique sound beginning to take shape.

WHY IT MATTERS.

Boy is a good starting point if you want to hear where U2’s guitar style and rhythmic interplay come from. The well-known opener points the way, but the continuous pair An Cat Dubh and Into the Heart gives the record depth. Here you also acquire the impetuosity that would later give way to grander gestures.

BEYOND THE RECORD.

Follow the further development from this early beginning on our U2 artist page. In the U2 Story, you can read how the interplay grows into a recognizable band language. THE EIGHTIES places those first steps amidst the new sounds of the decade.
