NIRVANA – Nevermind (1LP Vinyl)

€30

A chorus that breaks open, a bassline that keeps circling, and silence that could turn at any moment. Nevermind makes grand melodies out of small, restless movements; there is much to hear beyond the well-known singles as well.

KEEP DIGGING
THE RECORD.

Nevermind begins with a guitar figure that almost everyone recognizes, but the movement within Smells Like Teen Spirit remains worthwhile. The band retreats in the verse, allowing the chorus to take up space again and again. In Bloom employs a similar clash between restraint and full guitars, with a vocal melody that lingers much longer than the short instrumental accents. Dave Grohl’s drums give those transitions weight; meanwhile, Krist Novoselic’s bass keeps the songs agile.

Further on, the album becomes less predictable than its reputation as a hit record suggests. Drain You briefly abandons the melody for a strange, ascending middle section. Lounge Act derives its character from the bass; On a Plain combines speed with a strikingly clear chorus. Something in the Way reduces the scale to a voice and a slowly repeated accompaniment. That conclusion changes how you experience the preceding noise. Nevermind, originally from 1991, is simultaneously direct and full of subtle twists.

WHY IT MATTERS.

You don't need to buy this record to have one famous riff in your collection. The value lies in the sequence: the abrasive speed of Territorial Pissings makes the restraint of Something in the Way palpable. Those familiar only with the singles will discover in Drain You and Lounge Act how inventively the trio allows rhythm, melody, and disruption to interact.

BEYOND THE RECORD.

Read our grunge Story with the difference between Lithium and Territorial Pissings in mind: the same band can carry the melody and then take away all calm. Via the Nirvana artist page, you can continue to Bleach or In Utero. Our Nirvana Story follows what changed around this musical shift.
