NIRVANA – Bleach (1LP Vinyl)

€23

A heavy riff, a short outburst, and suddenly the clear melody of About a Girl. Bleach shows how Nirvana juxtaposed noise and songs even before their breakthrough.

KEEP DIGGING
THE RECORD.

Blew pulls Bleach down with his heavy guitar movement. Floyd the Barber keeps the rhythm short and angular; School stubbornly keeps circling around a few accents. The 1989 debut has a compact, dark band sound in which repetition builds tension. Cobain's voice sometimes stands opposite the riff and then becomes part of the same abrasive surface again. It is less about a grand gesture here than about the pressure with which a small musical thought is repeated.

About a Girl immediately changes the lighting: the chord progression and vocal line have a distinct pop form. Love Buzz gives the bass more space and lets the guitar respond to an undulating pattern. Negative Creep then opts for drive again and a voice that pushes against the accompaniment. These contrasts make Bleach more than an early, raw precursor. You hear a band experimenting with different ways to put a melody under tension.

WHY IT MATTERS.

For those familiar with Nevermind, Bleach is a fascinating step back. About a Girl reveals that the melodic side was already present; School and Negative Creep demonstrate how much power can come from repetition. The album is especially worthwhile when you listen to both sides together, rather than just looking for the most famous song.

BEYOND THE RECORD.

Follow early Nirvana in our Artist Story and read our grunge Story alongside the heavy movement of Blew. Via the Nirvana artist page, you can find About a Girl later on Unplugged: the same song takes on a completely different setting there.
