The Killers – Day & Age (1LP Vinyl)

€30

Human maintains a steady pulse, Joy Ride seeks the groove, and A Dustland Fairytale lets a story slowly unfold. Day & Age uses pop as a broad palette: bright and agile, with room for much more than one mood.

KEEP DIGGING
THE RECORD.

Losing Touch places horns and guitar alongside a tight rhythm. Human then makes the electronic pulse the fixed point above which the vocals can float. Spaceman opts for a much more exuberant drive, while Joy Ride shifts the emphasis to bass and rhythmic fluidity. The first half constantly changes color without losing its sense of direct melodies.

A Dustland Fairytale builds from a smaller opening into a much larger whole. I Can’t Stay introduces a light, almost sunny movement. Goodnight, Travel Well, on the other hand, makes the ending slow and heavy: the repetition and the growth of the arrangement demand patience. Thus, between the danceable beginning and the broad ending lies an album that regularly breaks open the festive exterior.

WHY IT MATTERS.

Day & Age suits those who want to discover different rhythms and moods in a pop record. The electronic line of Human offers a foothold, but the smooth bass of Joy Ride and the slow ending give the album other possibilities. Those who only know the two major singles miss especially how much space opens up in the second part.

BEYOND THE RECORD.

After Sam’s Town, the band finds a different balance between grand rock melodies and danceable pop. This interplay returns in new forms on later albums. View the selection on The Killers' artist page.

The Artist Story connects this third album with the early years and the broader arrangements of the later work. Read more in our Story about The Killers or listen on with Imploding the Mirage.
