KEEP DIGGING
THE RECORD.

This selection from the Tracks archive moves through different years without behaving like a conventional hit collection. Growin’ Up presents a young narrator; Seaside Bar Song and Where the Bands Are bring out the band’s enjoyment. My Love Will Not Let You Down demonstrates how a powerful song could still remain outside the original album order. The stripped-down Born in the U.S.A. shifts your attention from the familiar chorus to the narrative.

Further on, Pink Cadillac and Janey, Don’t You Lose Heart make room for a lighter movement, while The Fever opens up the soul side. The closing track, The Promise, is a piano version recorded for this release. Thus, the album ends with the voice and the song almost unprotected. The eighteen tracks ask you to hear Springsteen’s oeuvre as a series of decisions: what was released, what was left aside, and what takes on a different light later?

WHY IT MATTERS.

18 Tracks is an attractive choice if you are already familiar with the well-known studio albums and want to hear new connections. The selection remains clear, but varies enough in atmosphere to really add something. The subdued Born in the U.S.A. and the piano version of The Promise, in particular, make familiar titles exciting again.

BEYOND THE RECORD.

Follow the trail from the piano version of The Promise via the Bruce Springsteen artist page to the eponymous archive release. the Bruce Springsteen Artist Story provides more background on the different periods. our Born to Run Album Story helps to hear how the early ambition also influences songs that initially remained outside the albums.
