BEHIND THE RECORDS.

THE ARTIST.

Warhaus makes music for the twilight. Maarten Devoldere sings with a low, close-placed voice over arrangements in which bass, percussion, and small sound details are given plenty of space.

Warhaus constructs songs in which a restrained vocal style and carefully placed instruments create their own tension. A rhythm can continue for a long time while small melodic lines give the story a different color. The delivery leaves room for ambiguity and expectation. The music derives its movement from the relationship between proximity, distance, and the details that continue to emerge behind the voice.

Discovering Warhaus on vinyl invites you to follow a record side as a whole. A LP allows the recurring timbres and different moods to slowly come together. Also listen to the instrumental responses between the vocal phrases: a bass line, percussion accent, or short melody can change the perspective of a song without making the arrangement noticeably larger.

A vinyl album gives the music a fixed order and a tangible place in your collection. Give the lesser-known pieces time as well, and follow the transitions within a side of the record.

Alongside his work with Balthazar, he adopts his own perspective here. The songs move slowly, but silences, rhythmic accents, and an unexpected instrumental color keep them constantly in motion.

The self-titled Warhaus offers a good entry into that world. The songs allow details to slowly emerge: a trumpet timbre, a shifted rhythm, or a voice that lingers in the space a little longer.
