RUFUS WAINWRIGHT.

Rufus Wainwright approaches a song with both a personal story and a sense of theater. The vocals can start intimately and develop into a lush melody. Piano, harmony, and arrangement play a clear role in this. Pop, folk, and classical influences do not become isolated references, but components of his recognizable style of writing and singing.

Want One and Want Two offer different entry points into that musical universe. Folkocracy shifts the focus to a different repertoire and different voices. Whoever listens to Rufus Wainwright on vinyl gives such albums the space to reveal their own coherence, with a modest passage alongside a large, elaborate arrangement.

His interest in other song repertoire also finds a place among the available LPs at SJELF. Compare the contents of the vinyl releases and choose a starting point that suits your listening preference. A full record makes audible how strongly the performance can change the music, even when the melody seems familiar at first listen.
