THE KINKS.

With The Kinks, behind the seemingly lighthearted melody often lies a sharp image of everyday life. Ray Davies looked at streets, people, and habits and turned them into songs that sound both recognizable and idiosyncratic.

The Kinks gives rock and pop a recognizable narrative voice. A sharp riff can stand alongside a small observation about everyday life. The songs often have a direct structure, but leave room for humor, melancholy, and unexpected melodic twists. Guitar, vocals, and rhythm support a story without fully explaining it.

Listening to The Kinks on vinyl invites you to follow the albums beyond the most famous riffs. A LP presents characters, moods, and arrangements side by side within the same whole. Even a subdued song deserves attention: a small change in delivery or accompaniment can suddenly give a simple melody a different meaning.

A vinyl album gives the songs a fixed order and a tangible place in your collection. Give the lesser-known tracks time as well, and follow the transitions within a side of the record.

Those who want to hear the band beyond their well-known singles can start with Face To Face. Everybody’s In Show-Biz then demonstrates just how far their sense of character and observation could reach.

In the Artist Story, the journey of a young guitar band into a group with a voice all their own unfolds. Their music touches upon rock and rock & roll, but the stories make these records more than mere snapshots of the era.

Then listen to how The Beatles took a different British route, David Bowie kept inventing characters, and The Strokes, Blur, and Oasis each translated a band sound into their own time in their own way.
