BEHIND THE RECORDS.

THE ARTIST.

The Smiths was formed in 1982 in Manchester. Morrissey sings and writes the lyrics; Johnny Marr builds the music. With bassist Andy Rourke and drummer Mike Joyce, the band acquires its recognizable core. Four musicians, each with their own way of keeping a song moving.

The Smiths combines a distinct vocal style with guitar parts that keep the melody constantly in motion. A song can sound light while the lyrics maintain a different undertone. Bass and drums provide the music with a clear rhythmic foundation. The tension arises from the difference between the words and the way the band surrounds them.

Listening to The Smiths on vinyl makes the album tracks just as important as the well-known singles. A LP reveals recurring moods and various arrangements in conjunction. Listen to the subtle interactions between guitar and vocals: a short line or different accent can suddenly give a recognizable melody an unexpected color.

A vinyl album gives the songs a fixed order and a tangible place in your collection. Give the lesser-known tracks time as well, and follow the transitions within a side of the record.

In May 1983, the debut single Hand in Glove was released. Later that year, This Charming Man followed. Listen to that first guitar figure: the notes tumble over each other, but it remains light. Marr does not build a wall for the singer to climb over. He lays out a route with room for unexpected detours.

The untitled debut from 1984 demonstrates that this music is more than just an interplay between singer and guitarist. Rourke's bass lines loop, twist, and respond to the melody. Joyce holds the songs together without filling every gap.
