SIMPLY RED.

You often recognize a Simply Red track before you know the title. Mick Hucknall shifts a vowel forward, holds a note longer than expected, and then retreats behind the beat. It seems effortless. Yet, within that smooth surface, there is always tension: between control and surrender, between a danceable accompaniment and a voice trying to hold on to something.

BEHIND THE RECORDS.

THE ARTIST.

Simply Red pairs an agile rhythm section with a soul voice that makes the songs instantly recognizable. Pop melodies, funky accents, and sustained ballads fit within the same sound. The arrangements are meticulous but do not lose their physical feel. A bass line or short brass phrase can be just as defining as the vocals.

Simply Red on vinyl offers different listening paths: a studio album demonstrates the coherence of the songs, a live record reveals the connection with the band, and a remix release shifts the perspective to the rhythm. On a LP, these different approaches are given time to show their own character, beyond the most well-known melodies.

On a soul LP, backing vocals, bass lines, and short instrumental responses also deserve attention. Give the record side room to reveal its own progression. You will find the format and version among the available vinyl releases, so you can consciously choose your next record for your collection.

Simply Red was formed in Manchester in 1985. Prior to that, Hucknall had sung Frantic Elevators in The. That history helps to hear the band differently than merely as a purveyor of slick radio hits. Beneath the polished arrangements lies someone who understands urgency, but no longer needs to convey every emotion with volume.

The debut Picture Book brought together original songs and interpretations. The choice of Money’s Too Tight (To Mention), originally by The Valentine Brothers, immediately gave the group a social undertone. An economic reality could belong in a soul record just as well as a declaration of love. Hucknall’s vocals made the story tangible without turning it into a speech.
