SCIENTIST.

Scientist turns the mixing console into an instrument. In his dub, voices, drums, and melodies are stripped down and repositioned in the space. An echo can take over attention from a vocal line; a bass figure can carry an entire passage. The music remains rooted in reggae, but the perspective constantly shifts due to the treatment of the sound.

Anyone discovering Scientist on vinyl can hear a side of the record as a series of variations on rhythm and space. The pauses between the beats are at least as important as the beats themselves. A dub LP therefore demands attention to bass, reverb, and subtle adjustments: elements that give a familiar pattern a different tension each time.

A vinyl album gives the songs a fixed order and a tangible place in your collection. Give the lesser-known tracks time as well, and follow the transitions within a side of the record.
