RUN DMC.

Run-D.M.C. emphatically places vocals and rhythm first. The direct interplay between the rappers, the solid beats, and the use of rock sounds give the music a recognizable form. The songs demonstrate how little fuss a strong delivery requires: a short line and a clear accent can immediately set the tone.

The debut, King, or Rock and Raising Hell offer different entry points to that approach. Tougher Than Leather once again adds different accents to the same interplay. Listening to Run-D.M.C. on vinyl makes that development tangible: every LP has its own balance between beat, guitar, scratch, and the space occupied by the vocals.

An album side also gives the lesser-known tracks their place alongside the big singles. Pay attention to the response of one voice to another and to the moment when a rhythm is briefly broken open. The vinyl records available at SJELF offer a starting point for listening further to hip-hop in which group dynamics and a clear musical identity take center stage.
