THE ROOTS.

The Roots shows rap and a playing ensemble working closely together. The rhythms are not merely a foundation for words, but respond to the flow and form of the song. Bass lines, keyboards, and other colors give the production depth. Lyrics can be direct while the arrangement leaves room for multiple layers.

Listening to The Roots on vinyl makes the album context important. A LP allows various stories and musical ideas to remain in dialogue across multiple songs. In addition to the rap, pay attention to the drums, bass, and instrumental details: their timing determines how a phrase moves and how much tension a repeated pattern can hold.

A vinyl album gives the songs a fixed order and a tangible place in your collection. Give the lesser-known tracks time as well, and follow the transitions within a side of the record.
