From Jantje at number one to a sound of his own between Dutch pop and schlager. Jan Smit grew up for his audience, with Volendam always within earshot.

With some artists, you mainly remember the first record. With Jan Smit, you also remember how young he was. The Netherlands got to know him as Jantje: a small singer with a big voice and a song for his grandmother. Then he had to do something more difficult than breaking through. Growing up while everyone still knew what he sounded like as a child.

Jan Smit was born on December 31, 1985, in Volendam. As a child, he sang with De Zangertjes van Volendam. At the age of ten, he stood alongside BZN singer Carola Smit for the duet "Mama." This encounter took him from the choir to a much larger stage.
