BEHIND THE RECORDS.

THE ARTIST.

Howlin' Wolf makes a voice almost physically present. A phrase can growl, stretch, or suddenly come sharply to the fore, while the band holds the rhythm firmly. That directness makes his blues recognizable, but it is not just about power. The timing of a word and the response of a guitar can evoke just as much tension as the greatest vocal impact.

Moanin' in the Moonlight and the untitled Howlin' Wolf offer different entry points into his repertoire. The second record is also referred to as the Rockin' Chair Album. With vinyl releases, titles, bonus tracks, and pressings can vary; the tracklist helps to identify the recording. Listen to the dialogue between voice and accompaniment, and to the way a repeated pattern takes on a different charge each time.

A live record lets you hear that conversation in a different space. On a studio album, however, it is precisely how a compact song quickly establishes its own world that stands out. Play a full LP side and take in the different tempos. Wolf doesn't need to constantly rush forward to sound intense: a silence, a sustained note, and a response from the band can make the entire song move.
