BEHIND THE RECORDS.

THE ARTIST.

Gesaffelstein seeks out the dark edge of the dance floor; his rhythms cut through a production with little superfluous color.

Gesaffelstein creates electronic music in which control itself is a source of tension. The sounds can be harsh and dark, but their effect often comes from the space in between. A bass figure remains steadfast, a synthesizer line cuts through the rhythm, and a brief pause changes the temperature. The result has the physical immediacy of dance music and, at the same time, an almost cinematic attention to light, shadow, and repetition.

On Gamma, that approach takes a compact form. Listening to Gesaffelstein on vinyl here means paying attention to the succession of short, distinct scenes. The LP does not build atmosphere by stretching everything out; a change of sound or voice can open a new chapter in a matter of seconds. Follow the pulse beneath the sharp synthesizers and hear how small shifts in production determine the movement. As a result, the album remains interesting outside the context of a dance floor.

Gamma conveys that sense of control and threat in a compact form. Start with Gamma.

Place Justice next to it for raw energy, M83 for nocturnal vastness, and AIR for breathing space.
