BEHIND THE RECORDS.

THE ARTIST.

Genesis builds songs in which melody, rhythm, and story can take turns. The band moves from expansive musical worlds to instantly recognizable pop choruses, with a distinctive sense of arrangement that remains audible throughout the different periods.

Genesis likes to construct an album as a musical environment in which different rooms connect to one another. A clear vocal melody can flow into an instrumental landscape; a small rhythmic motif can later drive the entire band. The appeal of their progressive rock therefore also lies in the transitions. Keyboards, guitar, and rhythm section take turns leading the way, while the songs retain enough melodic recognition to carry you through the longer forms.

Genesis on vinyl reveals that development at the right pace. Foxtrot, Selling England By The Pound, and The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway invite listening in an album context, with attention to recurring sounds and tension arcs. On the more direct records, that musical precision is packaged more compactly. A LP side makes the difference between the two approaches tangible: the band can develop an idea broadly or present it in a few precise minutes.

Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot and Selling England By The Pound are entry points into the narrative side. Give the longer forms time to build their tension.

On The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, that world takes on a continuous album form. A Trick Of The Tail and Duke reveal different relationships between vocals, keyboards, and rhythm.

Invisible Touch and We Can't Dance place different emphases. Those looking for an initial overview can return to the individual albums via Turn It On Again: The Hits.

The routes through progressive rock and rock help place that development. With Yes, you hear a different way of making long forms, melodies, and virtuosity move together.

Also follow the solo worlds of Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins. Their own records offer a new perspective on two voices that each hold an important place in the history of Genesis.
