EPICA.

Epica builds music in layers: a solid rhythm, a melody that wants to rise above it, and arrangements that open a new door time and again. The power lies precisely in the interplay between those parts.

Omega gives a first impression of that scale; The Holographic Principle calls for a listen in which you give the details time to sink in. Both records reward attention.

Epica juxtaposes the power of a metal band with vocals and orchestral layers that open up a larger space. A riff can propel a passage tightly, while the vocals lay a longer melodic line over it. The tension arises in the relationship between those movements. Even a subdued moment counts: it determines how the next full entry lands.

A Epica album on vinyl reveals those larger arcs in the album order. On LP, heavy passages and softer parts find their own place. Follow the drums beneath the orchestral sounds or listen to a melody that returns later. This makes it clear how the different layers complement each other and how a record distributes its tension across multiple songs.

Through the Artist Story of Within Temptation, you discover a different Dutch route to a big metal sound. Heavy metal and progressive rock provide context to Epica’s combination of speed and execution.

Within Temptation and Nightwish also explore the space of a larger arrangement. Metallica, Black Sabbath, and De Staat reveal other forms of weight and tension.
