BEHIND THE RECORDS.

THE ARTIST.

Marshall Bruce Mathers III was born on October 17, 1972, in St. Joseph, Missouri. His musical identity took shape primarily in and around Detroit. There, he developed as a rapper in an environment where you have to earn attention with your voice, timing, and words.

You can hear that origin reflected in his need to stay sharp. To him, a line is rarely just information. He can prepare a sentence as if a joke is about to happen and then shift the emphasis. The listener must remain alert. The pleasure also lies in following that movement.

Eminem often allows the voice to determine the rhythm of an entire song. Syllables shift, rhymes follow one another rapidly, and a shift in emphasis can give a line a different meaning. The production provides a framework in which that movement remains clear. In addition to the words, listen to the breathing and short silences: they are part of the tension of the performance.

Eminem on vinyl presents an album as a succession of stories and moods. On LP, various productions and vocal registers stand side by side, with transitions that change the listening direction. Listen to an entire side and note the difference between a restrained passage and a fast, dense rap. The coherence emerges in both the lyrics and their musical setting.

His early album Infinite was released in 1996. It reveals a different Eminem than the world would come to know a few years later. The technique is there, but the greatly magnified figure of Slim Shady has yet to find his big stage. That difference makes the debut interesting: you hear a writer exploring his possibilities.

Also follow the musical paths of Dr. Dre and 2pac. Listen to the differences in vocals, rhythm, and arrangements: this will add more color to the similarities between these artists.
