DJ SHADOW.

DJ Shadow is the artist name of Josh Davis, the Californian producer and DJ who approaches sampling as a form of composition. A found drum beat or piano phrase takes on a new life through montage, timing, and new connections.

At university radio KDVS in Davis, he met kindred spirits around SoleSides. Through early tracks like In/Flux and the label Mo’ Wax, his music also reached outside California. Endtroducing..... from 1996 transformed his instrumental sample world into an internationally recognizable album.

The Private Press (2002), The Outsider (2006), and The Less You Know, the Better (2011) showcase different facets of his work. Hip-hop remains an important foundation, while guest vocals, electronics, and other forms of composition continually shift the direction.

The Mountain Will Fall was originally released on June 24, 2016, by Mass Appeal, featuring Run the Jewels, Nils Frahm, Ernie Fresh, Matthew Halsall, G Jones, and Bleep Bloop. The coupled 2026 anniversary edition contains the twelve-track program on two black LPs and new artwork by Paul Insect.

Our Pathetic Age followed in 2019. Action Adventure was released in October 2023 as a fourteen-track album without guest contributions; SJELF also offers this album on CD. The coupled 30th Anniversary Edition of Endtroducing is currently sold out.

Massive Attack offers a related listening route via spatial production and various voices. Portishead introduces a different tension between human vocals and carefully assembled sound. The similarities open a door; the differences make further listening interesting.
