BEHIND THE RECORDS.

THE ARTIST.

You don't need to know David Draiman's name to recognize his voice. With Disturbed, a single rhythmic outburst can be enough. Yet that sound tells only part of the story. Behind the menace lies a band that builds a melody just as carefully as a heavy riff.

Guitarist Dan Donegan, drummer Mike Wengren, and bassist Steve Kmak were already playing together in Brawl when Draiman joined in 1996. The name changed to Disturbed. According to music publisher Primary Wave, the new singer brought exactly the melodic identity the group was looking for. John Moyer later took over the bass position.

Disturbed builds songs around a pronounced rhythmic tension. The vocals can intervene sharply in a pattern and subsequently open up a chorus more broadly. Guitar and drums form a solid framework, but the accents within that framework give the material its own movement. A melodic passage gains extra weight when the band briefly makes room for it.

On LP, you can pay attention to the balance between pressure and rest. Not every song demands the same intensity; the variation determines how an album resonates as a whole. Flip to one side and hear how a restrained moment prepares the heavier material. The backing vocals and brief instrumental shifts can also take on more meaning than when listening to a single track.

An audience didn't appear on its own. In an interview about the early years, Wengren explained how the band distributed cassette demos at concerts. Small gigs funded new recordings. In this way, a following grew from bars on the south side of Chicago that already existed before a record label got involved.
