MOS DEF.

Mos Def makes rap move through language, musicality, and a distinct voice of his own. Lyrics can tell a story, but also play with sound and emphasis as if the voice were part of the rhythm section. In his work, hip-hop, soul, and other musical sources come close together. This gives the songs room for both a direct statement and a more subtle shift in atmosphere.

At SJELF, The Ecstatic is the concrete entry point to that repertoire on vinyl. An LP presents the various beats, voices, and transitions as a whole. The music can shift soundscapes without losing coherence. Listen to what a sample does to the lyrics and to the way a short instrumental passage prepares the next song.

Mos Def remains linked to the existing SJELF artist page to which the public list refers. Via Black Star and De La Soul, you can discover other routes through language-oriented, adventurous hip-hop. The product page of The Ecstatic displays the vinyl version and keeps the listening link connected to this specific album.
