CREED.

A clear guitar pattern, a low voice, a moment of patience. Then the band joins in and the room seems a size larger. Creed mastered that transition down to the last detail. In Higher and With Arms Wide Open, you hear how a relatively small musical opening can grow into something that thousands of people want to sing at once. The weight lies in the guitars, but the longing for space lies in the melody.

BEHIND THE RECORDS.

THE ARTIST.

It is music that speaks without much reservation. Scott Stapp sings with a dark, emphatic tone; Mark Tremonti provides that voice with a foundation of solid riffs and open chords. Sometimes this seriousness grates, at times it is disarming. At its best moments, the chorus feels like the culmination of a tension that the verse has carefully built up.

Creed was formed in 1994 in Tallahassee, Florida. Stapp and Tremonti, along with bassist Brian Marshall and drummer Scott Phillips, formed the lineup that brought about their breakthrough. Their debut My Own Prison was recorded at producer John Kurzweg's home and was initially released independently in 1997. Wind-up Records subsequently picked up the album for a wider release.

Creed employs a big band sound in service of direct melodies. The guitars lend weight to a passage, while Scott Stapp's vocals emphatically bring the emotion to the forefront. The chorus is prepared by a quieter or more tense verse. The music derives its strength from both the build-up and the outburst.

The Weathered on vinyl demonstrates that balance across an entire album. The live recording from San Antonio offers a different entry point: on stage, the interplay gains its own momentum. Follow the drums as the guitar part expands and listen to how a melody holds space within the heavy sound. A LP also gives the less emphatic songs a place alongside the big choruses.

In the vinyl selection of Creed at SJELF, you will find Weathered and Live In San Antonio (11/14/1999).
