CHRIS CORNELL.

An acoustic guitar is enough. As soon as Chris Cornell starts singing, the room takes on a different depth. The voice, which could cut through the heaviest guitars, proves convincing even in silence. Beneath the range and the raw edge lies a songwriter who knows how to make a melody stick.

BEHIND THE RECORDS.

THE ARTIST.

An acoustic guitar is enough. As soon as Chris Cornell starts singing, the room takes on a different depth. The voice, which could cut through the heaviest guitars, proves convincing even in silence. Beneath the range and the raw edge lies a songwriter who knows how to make a melody stick.

Cornell was born in 1964 and grew up as a musician in the Seattle scene. He also started as a drummer with Soundgarden, founded in 1984. The band combined metal, punk, and erratic rhythms. In Black Hole Sun, that sound became almost psychedelic pop: a melody that hits you easily, with unrest just beneath the surface.

With Temple of the Dog, he revealed a different color. His voice could be heavy and fierce, but also carry the warmth of soul. That difference lies not only in volume. It lies in the way he stretches a word, lets a tone fray, and then comes close again.

Chris Cornell could make a melody grand without smoothing out its tension. His voice carried both power and a raw vulnerability. The work with Soundgarden and Audioslave reveals different band environments; the solo albums, in turn, bring other choices to the forefront. The recognition lies not only in the range of his voice, but in the way he tilts a phrase.

The Carry On and the Chris Cornell Anthology offer two entry points on vinyl: a separate solo record and a broader overview. Also listen to the quiet passages, in which the vocals must carry weight without a wall of guitars. A LP makes these contrasts part of a single listen. From its artist page, you can follow the musical lineage further to the Soundgarden and Audioslave.

In Chris Cornell's vinyl selection for SJELF, you will find Carry On and Chris Cornell Anthology.
