CHIC.

Chic makes a groove sound natural by having every part work together precisely. Nile Rodgers’s guitar carves out short rhythmic patterns, while Bernard Edwards’ bass carries both the movement and a melodic line. The vocals do not need to constantly rise above this: they can become part of the same network of accents.

C’est Chic on vinyl makes it clear why this music can carry an entire album. Listen to the space between guitar and bass and to the way small answers give a repeated refrain new energy. The dance floor is already in the arrangement. A LP offers time to listen beyond the most well-known passages and to hear the carefully constructed transition to the next track as well.

A LP gives the music a beginning, a moment of rest when turning over, and an end. Therefore, listen to an entire side of the record. Which passage sticks in your mind when the familiar track is over? It is precisely the smaller transitions that can give an album a different character and reveal why you return to this artist.
