BEHIND THE RECORDS.

THE ARTIST.

Chef’Special feels at home between styles. A song can start relaxed, then find a different groove, and eventually break completely open on stage.

Amigo is a lively first stop. Unfold reveals a later side; together, the records demonstrate how the group keeps moving without losing its sense of interplay.

Chef'special's artistic story follows that free approach to influences. Their work touches on pop and rock, but the band primarily takes the space to make something of their own out of it.

Continue to the momentum of DI-RECT and the melodies of Racoon, or choose the unconventional turns of De Staat. Kane and Anouk offer two other Dutch stage personalities.

Chef’Special brings together various rhythms in songs that remain clear. A groove can lean towards funk or reggae, while the chorus maintains the directness of pop. Joshua Nolet’s vocals move between narrative passages and melodies that leave room for a whole audience. The band feel remains audible behind the accessible form.

The LP’s Amigo, Passing Through, Unfold, and New Gold provide different accents within that approach. Listen to the bass and drums when a song becomes briefly more restrained; the movement remains there. On vinyl, the less striking tracks also find a place in the whole. The album order helps to hear the more personal side of the band alongside the exuberance.
