THE ARTIST.

CASSIUS.

Cassius made house music with sunlight in the bassline. Philippe Zdar and Hubert “Boombass” Blanc-Francard combined hip-hop, disco, and studio craftsmanship with their own place on the dance floor. Their five albums tell how far a groove can travel.

BEHIND THE RECORDS.

THE ARTIST.

Cassius became known as the French duo Philippe Zdar and Hubert Blanc-Francard, aka Boombass. Their music connects house with disco, hip hop, soul, and pop. Studio technique serves as a means to create character and movement: a fragment can become an entirely new song.

Before debut, the two were already working on hip-hop productions under the name La Funk Mob. Zdar was also part of Motorbass. The album 1999 introduced Cassius to an international audience in 1999, featuring tracks such as Feeling for You and La Mouche.

Au Rêve (2002), 15 Again (2006), and Ibifornia (2016) consistently placed voices, songs, and various musical worlds in different locations. The Sound of Violence and I <3 U So are recognizable entry points to that development.

Dreems was released on June 21, 2019, two days after Zdar's passing. It is their fifth collaborative studio album. The twelve tracks, featuring contributions from Owlle, John Gourley, Mike D, and Vula Malinga, among others, are on the double LP linked here.

Boombass returned to their shared repertoire in 2024 with a best-of and Cassius Club. The return celebrates the duo's work. Zdar remains part of the history and the recordings; he is not presented as a current performing band member.

Daft Punk and Air are related listening routes within French electronic music, each with its own relationship between studio, song, and dance floor. The Genre Guides on French house and house place the records in their broader context.
