CARCASS.

Carcass combines a gritty, extreme sound with a surprisingly sharp sense of structure. The early records propel forward with grindcore energy, while later work gives more room to elaborate riffs and melodic guitar lines. The tension between these approaches makes the catalog interesting: rawness and precision are not opposites here.

On a LP, you hear that development in the way the band tilts a song. Drums can almost tear a passage apart, after which a riff brings everything back together. Place the early and later albums side by side and listen to the space between the instruments. A compilation offers an overview; a full studio album reveals the musical choices of a single period more clearly.

A LP gives the music a beginning, a moment of rest when turning over, and an end. Therefore, listen to an entire side of the record. Which passage sticks in your mind when the familiar track is over? It is precisely the smaller transitions that can give an album a different character and reveal why you return to this artist.
